Study in
New Zealand has only eight universities, and all of them rank internationally — a consistency no larger system matches. It also offers among the most generous student work rights of any destination, now up to 25 hours per week during study.

A
New Zealand's education system is small and unusually consistent. There are eight universities, and every one of them appears in the major international rankings — which means the gap between the best and the least-known institution is far narrower than in systems with hundreds of providers. For a student choosing from Nepal, that reduces one of the hardest risks: picking an institution that turns out to carry little weight. New Zealand also offers among the most generous student work rights available anywhere, recently increased to 25 hours per week.
New Zealand qualifications sit on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, administered by NZQA, and are recognised internationally. As elsewhere, professional registration is separate: nursing, engineering, teaching and accountancy each have their own registration body, and registration in New Zealand does not transfer automatically to Nepal or a third country.
New Zealand is geographically remote — flights from Kathmandu are long and connect through Asian or Gulf hubs, and travel home is expensive enough that most students do not do it often. That isolation is worth weighing honestly. Against it, quality of life is high, cities are small and manageable, and the natural environment is genuinely exceptional. Auckland is the largest and most expensive city; Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton and Palmerston North are considerably more affordable. The Nepali community is smaller than in Australia but well established in Auckland and Christchurch.

B
How qualifications in New Zealand are structured, and how long each level takes.
English language courses
8 weeks – 1 year
Delivered by universities, institutes of technology and private language schools, often with pathway agreements.
Foundation programmes
1 year
Bridges Nepali +2 to first-year undergraduate entry, usually with guaranteed progression on meeting stated grades.
Certificate and Diploma (Levels 4–6)
6 months – 2 years
Applied qualifications from institutes of technology and polytechnics, with routes into degree study.
Bachelor's degree
3 years, or 4 with honours
Standard undergraduate award. Professional degrees such as engineering and health sciences typically run four years.
Postgraduate Diploma
1 year
A common route for graduates seeking specialisation, and a recognised pathway into master's study.
Master's degree
1–2 years
Taught or research-based. Length depends on your prior qualification and whether it is in a cognate discipline.
Doctoral degree (PhD)
3–4 years
New Zealand has a distinctive arrangement: international PhD students are generally charged domestic tuition rates, which makes doctoral study substantially more affordable than elsewhere.

Requirements are set by each institution and each course. Treat the guidance below as a starting point, not a rule.
E
| Test | Typical range |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Commonly 6.0 overall for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate, with band minimums |
| PTE Academic | Commonly 50–58 overall |
| TOEFL iBT | Commonly 60–90 overall |
| Duolingo | Accepted by some institutionsAcceptance varies by institution and may differ from what Immigration New Zealand accepts. Confirm both. |
Admission English and visa English are not the same thing
The institution sets the admission requirement, and Immigration New Zealand separately specifies acceptable evidence of English for visa purposes. These are usually aligned but not identical, particularly for pathway and English-language programmes. Confirm both with your institution before booking a test.

How the funds requirement actually works
For tertiary, English language and other non-compulsory study, you must show NZD 20,000 for each year if your study lasts a year or more, or NZD 1,667 for each month for shorter study. This is in addition to your tuition fees, which are normally paid before the visa is granted. Funds must be genuinely available and traceable to a documented source. Immigration New Zealand publishes these figures directly, so unlike some destinations there is little ambiguity about the amount.
Biometrics may be required depending on your application. Follow the instructions provided with your application.
There is no routine interview for a New Zealand student visa. Immigration New Zealand may request additional information or, occasionally, an interview where clarification is needed.

Questions
NZD 20,000 for each year of study if your programme lasts a year or more, or NZD 1,667 per month for shorter study. This is for living costs and is in addition to your tuition fees, which are normally paid before the visa is granted. Immigration New Zealand publishes these figures directly, so there is little ambiguity — but show a comfortable margin rather than the exact minimum.
Up to 25 hours per week during study for eligible students, and full-time during scheduled holidays. Note that this was increased from the long-standing 20-hour limit, so older guidance you may read elsewhere is out of date. Not every student visa carries work rights — check the conditions stated on your own visa.
Yes, and the small number is actually an advantage for applicants. All eight appear in the major international rankings, which means the gap between the best-known and least-known is far narrower than in systems with hundreds of providers. You are much less likely to accidentally choose an institution that carries little weight.
It is genuinely the most remote destination in this guide, and it deserves an honest answer. Flights are long and connect through Asian or Gulf hubs, and the cost means most students do not return home during their studies. If being able to travel home for family events matters to you, weigh that seriously — Australia is considerably closer and better connected.
Yes. International doctoral students are generally charged domestic tuition rates, which is a distinctive New Zealand arrangement and makes doctoral study substantially more affordable than in Australia, the UK or the USA. Combined with doctoral scholarships, it is one of the strongest cases for choosing New Zealand.
Possibly. Partners of students in defined categories — particularly postgraduate research students and those in specified fields — may be eligible for a work visa. It depends on your own level and field of study, so confirm the current position for your specific programme before making plans.
New Zealand has strict border controls on food, plant and animal material to protect its agriculture, and they are strictly enforced with real penalties. Declare everything on arrival — instant fines apply for undeclared items, including things travellers consider harmless like packaged snacks or spices from home. Declaring costs nothing; not declaring can cost a great deal.
