Study in

New Zealand

New Zealand has only eight universities, and all of them rank internationally — a consistency no larger system matches. It also offers among the most generous student work rights of any destination, now up to 25 hours per week during study.

A

Destination overview

New Zealand's education system is small and unusually consistent. There are eight universities, and every one of them appears in the major international rankings — which means the gap between the best and the least-known institution is far narrower than in systems with hundreds of providers. For a student choosing from Nepal, that reduces one of the hardest risks: picking an institution that turns out to carry little weight. New Zealand also offers among the most generous student work rights available anywhere, recently increased to 25 hours per week.

Why students choose New Zealand

  • All eight universities rank internationally, so institutional choice carries less risk than in larger systems.
  • Work rights of up to 25 hours per week during study — more generous than most competing destinations.
  • A statutory Code of Practice governing the pastoral care of international students, giving defined protections and a complaints route.
  • Qualifications sit on a clear national framework and are recognised internationally.
  • Smaller class sizes and more accessible academic staff than in larger systems.

Strengths of the education system

  • Genuine research strength in agriculture, environmental science, earth sciences and veterinary science.
  • Strong engineering and computing provision relative to the size of the system.
  • Well-developed institutes of technology and polytechnics delivering applied qualifications.
  • Health sciences with established clinical placement structures.

Qualification recognition

New Zealand qualifications sit on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, administered by NZQA, and are recognised internationally. As elsewhere, professional registration is separate: nursing, engineering, teaching and accountancy each have their own registration body, and registration in New Zealand does not transfer automatically to Nepal or a third country.

Student life and living

New Zealand is geographically remote — flights from Kathmandu are long and connect through Asian or Gulf hubs, and travel home is expensive enough that most students do not do it often. That isolation is worth weighing honestly. Against it, quality of life is high, cities are small and manageable, and the natural environment is genuinely exceptional. Auckland is the largest and most expensive city; Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton and Palmerston North are considerably more affordable. The Nepali community is smaller than in Australia but well established in Auckland and Christchurch.

What students from Nepal should know about New Zealand

  • The funds requirement is clearly published: NZD 20,000 per year of study for tertiary programmes of a year or more, in addition to tuition.
  • Work rights were increased to up to 25 hours per week during study — check your own visa conditions, as they are stated there.
  • Tuition is normally paid before the visa is granted, and New Zealand operates a fee protection mechanism for that money.
  • Health and character requirements are assessed, including a medical examination and police certificate.
  • Acceptable medical and travel insurance is required for the duration of your stay.
  • The distance from Nepal is a genuine practical and emotional factor, particularly for students who have not lived away from home.

B

Education system

How qualifications in New Zealand are structured, and how long each level takes.

English language courses

8 weeks – 1 year

Delivered by universities, institutes of technology and private language schools, often with pathway agreements.

Foundation programmes

1 year

Bridges Nepali +2 to first-year undergraduate entry, usually with guaranteed progression on meeting stated grades.

Certificate and Diploma (Levels 4–6)

6 months – 2 years

Applied qualifications from institutes of technology and polytechnics, with routes into degree study.

Bachelor's degree

3 years, or 4 with honours

Standard undergraduate award. Professional degrees such as engineering and health sciences typically run four years.

Postgraduate Diploma

1 year

A common route for graduates seeking specialisation, and a recognised pathway into master's study.

Master's degree

1–2 years

Taught or research-based. Length depends on your prior qualification and whether it is in a cognate discipline.

Doctoral degree (PhD)

3–4 years

New Zealand has a distinctive arrangement: international PhD students are generally charged domestic tuition rates, which makes doctoral study substantially more affordable than elsewhere.

Some institutes of technology and private providers offer additional start dates. Verify for your specific programme.

D

Academic requirements

Requirements are set by each institution and each course. Treat the guidance below as a starting point, not a rule.

Undergraduate applicants
Nepali +2 or equivalent Grade 12. Universities assess international qualifications against published equivalences, and a foundation year is a common and legitimate route where direct entry is not available. Competitive programmes in health sciences and engineering set higher requirements and may have limited places.
Postgraduate applicants
A recognised bachelor's degree. A three-year Nepali bachelor's is often followed by a Postgraduate Diploma rather than direct master's entry, which is a normal and well-established route rather than a setback. Confirm the specific pathway with the institution.
Research applicants
A qualification with a substantial research component, a research proposal, and a supervisor who has agreed to take you on. Note that international doctoral students are generally charged domestic fees, which makes New Zealand unusually attractive for PhD study.
Applicants with a study gap
Gaps are assessed as part of your overall study plan and intentions. Document the period with employment evidence or further study. Immigration New Zealand considers whether you are a genuine student, so a coherent account matters.
Applicants with backlogs
Assessed by the institution against the overall record. Provide complete transcripts — omissions are treated as misrepresentation and carry serious consequences.
Pathway applicants
Foundation and diploma routes into degree programmes are well established, often with credit toward the degree. Confirm progression terms and credit in writing.

E

English language requirements

Accepted English tests and typical score ranges for New Zealand
TestTypical range
IELTS AcademicCommonly 6.0 overall for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate, with band minimums
PTE AcademicCommonly 50–58 overall
TOEFL iBTCommonly 60–90 overall
DuolingoAccepted by some institutionsAcceptance varies by institution and may differ from what Immigration New Zealand accepts. Confirm both.

Admission English and visa English are not the same thing

The institution sets the admission requirement, and Immigration New Zealand separately specifies acceptable evidence of English for visa purposes. These are usually aligned but not identical, particularly for pathway and English-language programmes. Confirm both with your institution before booking a test.

I

Work rights while studying

Work rules change often. The conditions on your own visa grant are what actually apply to you.

While studying

Eligible students may work part-time up to 25 hours per week while studying, subject to the conditions stated on their visa.

Immigration New ZealandReviewed 26 August 2026

During scheduled breaks

Full-time work is generally permitted during scheduled holidays, subject to visa conditions.

Immigration New ZealandReviewed 26 August 2026

Conditions and restrictions

  • Work rights depend on your programme and are stated explicitly on your visa — check that document rather than relying on general guidance.
  • Not all student visas carry work rights; students on short courses or certain English language programmes may not have them.
  • Doctoral and master's by research students generally have different, more flexible arrangements.
  • Working beyond your permitted hours breaches your visa conditions and can affect your visa and future applications.

Dependants: Partners of students in defined categories, particularly postgraduate research students and those studying in specified fields, may be eligible for a work visa, and dependent children may be able to study. Eligibility depends on your level and field of study — confirm the current position before making family plans.

J

After you graduate

Post Study Work Visa

A visa allowing eligible graduates of New Zealand qualifications to work for any employer, or to seek work, after completing their studies.

Duration

Post-study work duration — verification pending

Conditions

  • The qualification must be at an eligible level and meet minimum duration requirements.
  • You must apply within a defined period after completing your qualification.
  • Some qualification levels require the field of study to align with a defined occupation list.
  • You must have held an appropriate student visa for the qualification.

This is not a residency pathway

  • This is a temporary work visa, not residence, and does not automatically lead to it.
  • Eligibility rules have changed more than once — confirm your specific qualification qualifies before enrolling.
  • Residence pathways such as the Skilled Migrant Category are separate processes with their own points-based criteria that change independently.
  • Do not choose a qualification primarily as a migration route.

Funds you must show

$20,000 per year, plus tuition

Immigration New ZealandReviewed 26 August 2026

How the funds requirement actually works

For tertiary, English language and other non-compulsory study, you must show NZD 20,000 for each year if your study lasts a year or more, or NZD 1,667 for each month for shorter study. This is in addition to your tuition fees, which are normally paid before the visa is granted. Funds must be genuinely available and traceable to a documented source. Immigration New Zealand publishes these figures directly, so unlike some destinations there is little ambiguity about the amount.

Health requirements

  • A medical examination with an approved panel physician is required, typically including a chest X-ray.
  • Acceptable medical and travel insurance covering your full period of stay is required.
  • Health requirements are assessed as part of determining whether you have an acceptable standard of health.

Biometrics and interview

Biometrics may be required depending on your application. Follow the instructions provided with your application.

There is no routine interview for a New Zealand student visa. Immigration New Zealand may request additional information or, occasionally, an interview where clarification is needed.

Processing time

Immigration New Zealand publishes indicative processing times by visa type, updated regularly. Check the current figures rather than relying on a quoted estimate.

Immigration New ZealandReviewed 26 August 2026

Dependants

Partners of students in defined categories — particularly postgraduate research students and those in specified fields of study — may be eligible for a work visa, and dependent children may be able to study. Eligibility depends on your level and field of study, so confirm the current position for your specific programme before making family plans.

Common causes of delay

  • Medical examination and police certificate turnaround.
  • Funds evidence that does not clearly demonstrate the source of money.
  • Incomplete applications requiring follow-up requests.
  • Peak volumes ahead of the February and July intakes.
  • Offer of Place conditions not yet met at the point of application.

Mistakes that cost people their application

  • Underestimating the cost and length of travel, and the practical reality that returning home mid-study is expensive.
  • Showing exactly NZD 20,000 with no margin — funds should comfortably exceed the minimum.
  • Assuming work rights apply to every student visa. They do not, and yours are stated on your visa.
  • Arranging insurance that does not meet the acceptable standard.
  • Booking flights before the visa decision.
  • Bringing food or plant material through the border — New Zealand's biosecurity rules are strict and penalties are real.
  • Failing to disclose a previous visa refusal from any country.

After you submit

Track the application through your Immigration New Zealand account and respond promptly to any request for further information.

If your visa is granted

  1. 1.Read the visa conditions carefully, particularly your specific work rights and course requirements.
  2. 2.Confirm accommodation before travelling; halls of residence simplify a first year considerably.
  3. 3.Ensure insurance is active from your departure date.
  4. 4.Declare all food, plant and animal products at the border — biosecurity is taken very seriously.
  5. 5.Apply for an IRD number after arrival if you intend to work.
  6. 6.Complete enrolment and attend orientation.

If your visa is refused

  1. 1.Immigration New Zealand provides reasons for the decline, which identify the specific requirement not met.
  2. 2.Common grounds include insufficient funds evidence, health or character issues, or doubt about genuine intentions as a temporary entrant.
  3. 3.You may be able to request reconsideration within a defined and short period — check the deadline in your letter immediately.
  4. 4.Clarify your provider's fee refund position, since tuition will normally already have been paid.
  5. 5.Disclose the decline in any future application to any country.

Questions

Studying in New Zealand — common questions

How much money do I need to show for a New Zealand student visa?

NZD 20,000 for each year of study if your programme lasts a year or more, or NZD 1,667 per month for shorter study. This is for living costs and is in addition to your tuition fees, which are normally paid before the visa is granted. Immigration New Zealand publishes these figures directly, so there is little ambiguity — but show a comfortable margin rather than the exact minimum.

How many hours can I work as a student in New Zealand?

Up to 25 hours per week during study for eligible students, and full-time during scheduled holidays. Note that this was increased from the long-standing 20-hour limit, so older guidance you may read elsewhere is out of date. Not every student visa carries work rights — check the conditions stated on your own visa.

Are New Zealand universities any good if there are only eight?

Yes, and the small number is actually an advantage for applicants. All eight appear in the major international rankings, which means the gap between the best-known and least-known is far narrower than in systems with hundreds of providers. You are much less likely to accidentally choose an institution that carries little weight.

Is New Zealand too far from Nepal?

It is genuinely the most remote destination in this guide, and it deserves an honest answer. Flights are long and connect through Asian or Gulf hubs, and the cost means most students do not return home during their studies. If being able to travel home for family events matters to you, weigh that seriously — Australia is considerably closer and better connected.

Is a PhD in New Zealand really cheaper?

Yes. International doctoral students are generally charged domestic tuition rates, which is a distinctive New Zealand arrangement and makes doctoral study substantially more affordable than in Australia, the UK or the USA. Combined with doctoral scholarships, it is one of the strongest cases for choosing New Zealand.

Can my partner work if they come with me?

Possibly. Partners of students in defined categories — particularly postgraduate research students and those in specified fields — may be eligible for a work visa. It depends on your own level and field of study, so confirm the current position for your specific programme before making plans.

What is the biosecurity thing everyone mentions?

New Zealand has strict border controls on food, plant and animal material to protect its agriculture, and they are strictly enforced with real penalties. Declare everything on arrival — instant fines apply for undeclared items, including things travellers consider harmless like packaged snacks or spices from home. Declaring costs nothing; not declaring can cost a great deal.
