Duolingo English Test
Duolingo English Test (DET)
Taken online from home, usually the cheapest and fastest option — but acceptance varies more than any other test, and that is the thing to check first.
What Duolingo English Test is
The Duolingo English Test is taken online, at home, on your own computer, with remote proctoring. It is adaptive: questions become harder or easier depending on how you answer, so the test can measure your level in far less time than a conventional test. It is typically the cheapest and fastest of the English tests, and the least demanding logistically — no test centre, no travel, no fixed date.
Who accepts it
Acceptance has expanded substantially, particularly among US and Canadian institutions, and many universities across all six destinations now accept it for admission. The critical caveat is that university acceptance and immigration acceptance are separate questions, and the DET is not accepted for every student visa route. Verify both before you book — this is the test where students most often discover a problem late.
Who should take it
- Students applying to institutions that have explicitly confirmed they accept it, particularly in the USA and Canada.
- Applicants who need a result very quickly, since results arrive faster than any centre-based alternative.
- Students outside Kathmandu for whom travelling to a test centre is a genuine obstacle.
- Students on a tight budget — but only after confirming acceptance for both admission and visa.
Test format
The test combines an adaptive graded section with a video interview and a writing sample. It is taken in one sitting on your own computer with a webcam, and the environment requirements are strict: a quiet room, no interruptions, no notes, ears and face visible throughout, and no looking away from the screen. Sessions are invalidated for rule breaches, so read the requirements carefully before you start.
Adaptive graded section
Majority of the testMixed question types — read and complete, listen and type, read aloud, write about the photo, speak about the photo, interactive reading and listening
Literacy, comprehension, conversation and production. Difficulty adjusts continuously based on your answers.
Video interview and writing sample
Final part of the testSpoken response to a prompt and an extended written response
Extended speaking and writing. These are not scored into the certified result in the same way as the graded section, but are sent to institutions to review alongside your score.

How scoring works
10 to 160, in 5-point increments
You receive an overall score plus subscores for literacy, comprehension, conversation and production. Institutions set their own required overall score, and requirements vary widely. Because your video interview and writing sample are shared with institutions, a score that looks adequate can still be considered alongside a weak spoken sample — the score is not the whole picture.

Registering and getting results
We do not publish test fees. Providers set them per country and per centre, and a fee that has gone stale is worse than none — check the official site when you book.
- First, confirm in writing that your target institutions accept the DET — and confirm the immigration position for your destination separately.
- Create an account on the official Duolingo English Test site.
- Check the technical requirements: a working webcam and microphone, a supported browser, and a stable internet connection.
- Prepare a quiet, well-lit room where you will not be interrupted.
- Have your passport ready for identity verification at the start.

How to prepare
What actually moves a score, based on where students from Nepal most often lose marks.
- Confirm acceptance before you spend any time preparing. This is the single most important step for this test, and the one most often skipped.
- Test your internet connection, webcam and microphone thoroughly. A dropped connection mid-test is a real risk in Nepal and can invalidate the session.
- Practise the rules as strictly as the test enforces them — no looking away, no speaking to anyone, no notes. Students fail on procedure, not English.
- Take the official practice test to get used to the adaptive format, which feels unlike any other English test.
- Practise speaking to a webcam. The video interview is shared with institutions, so it is worth being able to speak fluently to a camera.
- Because the test is adaptive, answering early questions carefully matters — they shape the difficulty of everything that follows.

Duolingo English Test — common questions
Will my university accept the Duolingo English Test?
Many do, but many do not, and it varies more than for any other test. Confirm directly with each institution in writing before booking. Separately, confirm whether the immigration authority for your destination accepts it for the student visa — these are two different questions and a yes to one is not a yes to the other.
What happens if my internet drops during the test?
The session can be invalidated. Given connection reliability in parts of Nepal, this is a real consideration. Test your connection beforehand, use the most stable connection available to you, and have a backup plan for the day.
Why is the Duolingo test so much cheaper?
There is no test centre, no invigilator in the room and no human examiner scoring it — the test is adaptive and largely automatically scored, with remote proctoring. That is also why some institutions and immigration authorities treat it differently from centre-based tests.
Can I take it more than once?
Yes, subject to the limits the provider sets on how many certified tests you may take in a given period. Check the current policy on the official site, as these limits have changed.
