Scholastic Assessment Test (Digital SAT)
Used for undergraduate admission in the USA — now fully digital, adaptive and shorter than the test your seniors sat.
What SAT is
The SAT is an admission test used mainly for undergraduate entry to universities in the United States. It has moved to a fully digital, adaptive format that is materially different from the paper test taken until recently — it is shorter, delivered on a computer through the College Board's own application, and the difficulty of the second module in each section adapts to how you performed on the first. Any preparation material written for the old paper SAT is now misleading.
Who accepts it
Primarily US undergraduate admissions, though a growing number of universities elsewhere accept it. Importantly, many US institutions have adopted test-optional policies, meaning the SAT is not required at all — but a strong score can still strengthen an application and can matter for merit scholarships. Check each institution's current policy, since these have changed repeatedly.

Test format
The Digital SAT is taken on a computer using the College Board's Bluebook application, at a test centre. Each of the two sections is delivered in two modules; your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second. A graphing calculator is permitted throughout the Math section and is built into the application.
Reading and Writing
Two modulesShort passages, each with a single question
Comprehension, vocabulary in context, expression of ideas, and standard English conventions. Passages are much shorter than on the old paper test — a significant change.
Math
Two modulesMultiple choice and student-produced responses
Algebra, advanced maths, problem solving and data analysis, and some geometry and trigonometry. A calculator is permitted throughout.

How scoring works
400 to 1600 total, combining two sections scored 200 to 800 each
Because the test is adaptive at the module level, your score reflects both accuracy and the difficulty of the questions you were routed to. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so leaving a question blank is never advantageous — always answer. Score requirements vary enormously by institution, and at test-optional institutions there is no requirement at all.

Registering and getting results
We do not publish test fees. Providers set them per country and per centre, and a fee that has gone stale is worse than none — check the official site when you book.
- Create a College Board account.
- Register for a test date and select a test centre in Nepal.
- Download and set up the Bluebook application well before test day, and complete the exam setup.
- Check the approved identification requirements carefully — these are strictly enforced.
- Confirm whether your target institutions actually require the SAT before committing to it.

How to prepare
What actually moves a score, based on where students from Nepal most often lose marks.
- Use only Digital SAT material. Preparation written for the paper test is out of date in format, timing and passage length, and will actively mislead you.
- Practise in the Bluebook application itself so the interface is familiar on test day.
- Because the second module adapts to the first, the early questions carry more consequence than students expect. Work carefully at the start.
- Never leave an answer blank — there is no penalty for a wrong answer.
- Reading passages are now short and each carries one question. Practise this rhythm; it is very different from long-passage reading.
- Learn the built-in calculator before test day rather than discovering it during the test.

SAT — common questions
Do I even need the SAT?
Possibly not. Many US universities are now test-optional, meaning you can apply without a score. But a strong score can still strengthen an application and often matters for merit scholarships, and at the most selective institutions most admitted students still submit one. Check each of your target institutions' current policy before deciding.
How is the Digital SAT different from the old SAT?
Substantially. It is shorter, taken on a computer, adaptive at the module level, uses much shorter reading passages with one question each, and permits a calculator throughout the Math section. Practice material for the old paper test is no longer a reliable guide.
What does 'adaptive' mean for my score?
Each section has two modules. How you perform on the first determines whether the second is easier or harder, and your final score reflects both accuracy and the difficulty level you were routed to. In practice this means the first module deserves careful, unhurried work.
Should I guess if I do not know an answer?
Always. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is strictly worse than a guess. Eliminate what you can and choose from the rest.
