Study in

United Kingdom

The UK offers the shortest route to a postgraduate qualification of any major destination — most taught master's degrees run twelve months. Its visa rules are also the most explicitly published, which makes preparing a strong application more predictable than elsewhere.

Immigration and cost information on this page was last reviewed on . Every figure below shows the organisation it came from and when it was checked. Rules and fees change — confirm against the official source before you apply or pay anything.

A

Destination overview

The UK's central advantage for Nepali students is time. A taught master's degree usually takes twelve months rather than two years, and a bachelor's degree three years rather than four. That difference compounds: one less year of tuition, one less year of living costs, and a year earlier into work. Against that, the UK asks for its money up front and documents its requirements with unusual precision — which is a genuine advantage if you prepare properly, because there is very little guesswork about what is expected.

Why students choose UK

  • Twelve-month taught master's degrees materially reduce the total cost of a postgraduate qualification.
  • Degrees are recognised worldwide, and the sector's quality assurance is independently regulated.
  • Requirements are published in exact figures — maintenance amounts, holding periods and fees are stated openly rather than assessed case by case.
  • Universities are spread across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so costs outside London are considerably lower.
  • A well-established Nepali community, particularly across England, and direct flight connections via Gulf hubs.

Strengths of the education system

  • Long-standing depth in business, law, engineering, computing and the health sciences.
  • Scotland's four-year undergraduate degrees offer broader early-year study for students unsure of specialisation.
  • Research-intensive universities with strong doctoral funding structures.
  • A well-developed placement-year culture in many undergraduate degrees.

Qualification recognition

UK qualifications sit within nationally regulated frameworks and are widely recognised internationally. Professional recognition, as everywhere, is a separate matter: nursing, medicine, law, engineering and accountancy each have their own registration body, and a UK degree does not by itself grant the right to practise in Nepal or in a third country. Where professional practice is the goal, confirm the registration route before choosing the course.

Student life and living

The London/non-London divide is the single most important financial fact about studying in the UK, and it is written into the visa rules themselves. Living costs, rent and travel are substantially higher in London, and the maintenance requirement reflects that. Cities like Sheffield, Leicester, Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle and Coventry offer strong universities at materially lower cost. Most institutions guarantee first-year accommodation for international students, and student discounts on rail travel and retail are widely available.

What students from Nepal should know about UK

  • Applicants from Nepal are required to provide a tuberculosis test certificate from a UK-approved clinic. This is a specific requirement for Nepal, not a general one, and the clinic must be on the approved list.
  • The 28-day fund-holding rule is applied strictly. Funds must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days, and the statement's end date must fall within 31 days of the application date.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid in full, up front, for the whole visa period — this is a significant sum that students frequently overlook when budgeting.
  • Rules on bringing dependants have been tightened in recent years and now depend on the course type. Verify current eligibility before making family plans.
  • Your university must hold a licensed student sponsor status. Verify this on the published register rather than taking it on trust.

B

Education system

How qualifications in UK are structured, and how long each level takes.

Pre-sessional English

6–20 weeks

English preparation delivered by the university itself, usually accepted in place of a further external test where you are close to the requirement.

Foundation year

1 year

Bridges Nepali +2 to first-year undergraduate entry. Progression to the linked degree is normally guaranteed on meeting stated grades.

Bachelor's degree

3 years (4 in Scotland, or with a placement year)

The standard undergraduate award. Scottish degrees run four years with a broader first two years. Sandwich degrees add a paid industrial placement year.

Pre-master's / graduate diploma

6–12 months

For applicants whose degree or grades fall short of direct master's entry, with progression into the linked master's programme.

Taught master's (MSc, MA, MBA)

12 months

The UK's distinctive offering — a full postgraduate qualification in one calendar year, typically two taught semesters plus a dissertation over the summer.

MPhil and PhD

2 years / 3–4 years

Research degrees requiring a proposal and a supervisor who has agreed to take you. Funded studentships are competitive and applied for separately from admission.

C

Intakes and when to start preparing

Not every institution offers every intake. Always confirm availability for your specific programme.

Autumn (September)

Major intake

September – early October

Start preparing: October–December of the previous year

By far the largest intake, with the fullest course choice, the most scholarship opportunity and guaranteed accommodation at most institutions.

Winter (January)

Secondary

January – February

Start preparing: April–June of the previous year

Widely available for business, computing and management programmes, considerably less so for laboratory-based, clinical and professionally accredited degrees.

Spring (May)

Limited

May

Start preparing: October–December of the previous year

Offered by a small number of institutions for a narrow set of programmes. Verify availability for your specific course before planning around it.

D

Academic requirements

Requirements are set by each institution and each course. Treat the guidance below as a starting point, not a rule.

Undergraduate applicants
Nepali +2 or equivalent Grade 12. Many universities accept +2 directly for a range of degrees; the most selective institutions and courses often expect a foundation year or A Levels first. Requirements are set course by course, and a strong overall aggregate matters more than any single subject unless the course specifies prerequisites.
Postgraduate taught applicants
A recognised bachelor's degree, with universities expressing requirements as a UK classification equivalent — commonly a 2:1 or 2:2. Nepali percentage marks are converted using each university's own published scale, so the same transcript can meet one university's threshold and miss another's. Check the specific institution's conversion table rather than assuming.
Research applicants
A master's degree, a research proposal and a supervisor willing to take you on. Contact potential supervisors before submitting a formal application — an unsolicited application without prior contact rarely progresses.
Applicants with a study gap
UK universities are generally pragmatic about gaps, particularly at postgraduate level where relevant work experience often strengthens an application. Document the period with employment letters or evidence of further study. The visa assessment considers your overall credibility as a student, so a coherent account matters.
Applicants with backlogs
Policies vary by institution. Many will consider applicants with a limited number of resits provided the final classification meets the requirement. Disclose your complete academic record — a discovered omission is treated as deception and carries far heavier consequences than the backlog.
Pathway applicants
Foundation, international year one and pre-master's routes give a documented progression into a named degree. Confirm in writing which degree you progress to, into which year, and what grades you must achieve to progress.

E

English language requirements

Accepted English tests and typical score ranges for United Kingdom
TestTypical range
IELTS AcademicCommonly 6.0–7.0 overall with no component below 5.5–6.5For visa purposes at degree level the university, as a licensed sponsor, may assess your English itself. Below degree level a Secure English Language Test (SELT) is required — IELTS for UKVI, not the standard IELTS.
PTE AcademicCommonly 59–70 overallCheck whether the course requires the UKVI-approved version.
TOEFL iBTCommonly 78–100 overall
DuolingoAccepted by some institutions for admissionAcceptance for admission does not necessarily mean acceptance for visa purposes. Confirm both with the university before booking.

Admission English and visa English are not the same thing

The UK draws a sharper distinction than most countries between admission English and visa English. At degree level a licensed sponsor can assess your English itself and confirm this on the CAS. Below degree level you must sit an approved Secure English Language Test at an approved centre — an ordinary IELTS booking will not satisfy this. Ask your university explicitly which test and which version they require for the CAS, and book only after they confirm.

F

Popular fields of study in UK

Where UK has genuine depth, and what to check before you commit to a field.

Business Management and MBA

The largest field by international enrolment, with one-year master's programmes and strong accreditation through AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB at leading schools.

Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence

Deep research strength and a large number of conversion master's programmes designed for graduates from other disciplines.

Nursing and Health Sciences

Substantial NHS-linked clinical placement provision. Note that NMC registration is a separate process with its own English requirement, usually higher than the university's.

Engineering

Programmes accredited by the Engineering Council carry recognition through the Washington Accord, which travels internationally.

Finance and Accounting

Programmes frequently carry exemptions from ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW professional examinations — check the specific exemptions offered, as they vary considerably.

Data Science and Analytics

Widely available at master's level, often accessible to graduates from mathematics, economics and engineering backgrounds.

Public Health

Strong schools of public health and tropical medicine with genuine international research standing.

Law (LLM)

One-year specialist master's degrees in international, commercial and human rights law. An LLM does not qualify you to practise in the UK.

Hospitality and Tourism Management

Well-established programmes, many with integrated placement components.

Education

Master's-level study in education policy, TESOL and educational leadership. Teacher registration is a separate route.

Scholarships and funding

We do not publish award amounts without a verified source. Values and criteria change every year — always check the awarding body's own page.

Chevening Scholarships

Government — full

The UK Government's flagship award for future leaders, covering tuition, a living stipend and travel for a one-year master's. Highly competitive, with a demanding application requiring documented leadership experience and a clear plan to return. Applications are made directly during a fixed annual window.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Government — full

Funded by the UK Government for students from Commonwealth countries including Nepal, focused on development-relevant fields. Applied for through the nominating body, not directly to the university.

University international scholarships

Merit — partial tuition

Nearly every UK university offers partial tuition awards to strong international applicants. Some are automatic on offer; many require a short separate application with an early deadline. Value and criteria change annually — check the university's own page.

Departmental and subject awards

Merit — partial tuition

Held by individual schools and departments, often less competitive than headline university-wide awards simply because fewer applicants find them.

Early-payment and alumni discounts

Conditional discount

Reductions for paying tuition early or for progressing from a linked undergraduate degree at the same institution. Terms are set by the university.

Doctoral studentships

Research — tuition and stipend

Funded PhD positions covering fees and a living stipend, usually attached to a specific research project and advertised with its own deadline.

I

Work rights while studying

Work rules change often. The conditions on your own visa grant are what actually apply to you.

While studying

Work is permitted during term time up to a weekly limit set by your visa conditions, with the limit depending on your course level.

Confirm with official source · UK Government (GOV.UK)Reviewed 26 August 2026

During scheduled breaks

Full-time work is generally permitted outside term time, including during official vacations and after your course has formally ended.

Confirm with official source · UK Government (GOV.UK)Reviewed 26 August 2026

Conditions and restrictions

  • Self-employment and freelance work are not permitted.
  • Work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach is not permitted.
  • Permanent full-time positions are not permitted while studying.
  • Your exact permitted hours are stated on your visa decision — check that document rather than relying on general guidance.
  • Exceeding the permitted hours is a breach of visa conditions and can affect both your current visa and any future application.

Dependants: Eligibility to bring dependants has been restricted in recent years and now depends on your course type and level. Check the current rules before making any family arrangements — this is one of the most frequently changed areas of UK student immigration policy.

J

After you graduate

Graduate route

An unsponsored visa allowing eligible graduates to stay and work, or look for work, at any skill level after successfully completing a UK degree.

Duration

Post-study work duration — verification pending

Conditions

  • You must have completed an eligible course at a licensed sponsor institution.
  • The institution must have reported successful completion to the Home Office.
  • You must apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge is payable again for the Graduate route period.

This is not a residency pathway

  • The Graduate route is temporary and cannot be extended.
  • It does not lead directly to settlement. To remain longer you must switch to another route, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, which requires a sponsoring employer and a role meeting the salary and skill thresholds.
  • Time on the Graduate route does not count toward settlement.
  • The route has been reviewed repeatedly. Do not build a long-term plan on its current terms remaining unchanged.

K

Applying to UK from Nepal

Twenty steps from first conversation to arrival. Steps marked "Specific to UK" do not appear in the same form for other destinations.

  1. Initial counselling

We assess whether the UK genuinely suits your goals and budget, particularly the trade-off between a shorter, more intense programme and the higher up-front cost.

    Typically: 1 session

  2. Academic and financial profile assessment

Reviewing transcripts against UK classification equivalents, and confirming your funding position against the precise maintenance rules.

    Typically: 1–2 weeks

  3. Verify sponsor licence and shortlist

    Specific to UK

Every institution you apply to must hold a licensed student sponsor status, which is publicly listed. We shortlist against your profile, budget and the London/non-London cost difference.

    Typically: 1–2 weeks

  4. English test — confirm the right version first

    Specific to UK

Ask the university which test and which version they require for the CAS. Booking a standard test when a UKVI-approved SELT is needed is a costly and common error.

    Typically: 4–12 weeks

  5. Document collection

Transcripts, certificates, references, CV and personal statement. Reference letters typically take the longest — request them early.

    Typically: 2–4 weeks, in parallel

  6. University applications

Undergraduate applications commonly go through UCAS; most postgraduate applications go directly to the university.

    Typically: 2–8 weeks to decision

  7. Offer review

We read the offer with you — conditions, deposit, fee schedule and refund terms. Distinguish clearly between a conditional and an unconditional offer.

    Typically: Same week

  8. Meet conditions to secure an unconditional offer

    Specific to UK

The CAS cannot be issued while an offer remains conditional. This step gates everything downstream.

    Typically: Varies

  9. Scholarship applications

Chevening and Commonwealth have fixed annual windows and must be planned around; university awards often have early deadlines.

    Typically: Varies

  10. Pay the deposit and accept

Payment of the tuition deposit is normally what triggers CAS issue. Pay only into the university's own verified account.

    Typically: 1–2 weeks

  11. Hold maintenance funds for 28 consecutive days

    Specific to UK

This is the step most often mistimed. The money must sit in a qualifying account for 28 unbroken days, and your closing statement date must fall within 31 days of the visa application date. Plan the calendar backwards from your intended application date.

    Typically: 28 days minimum

  12. Receive the CAS

    Specific to UK

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is an electronic record with a reference number. Check every detail on it — a single error in your name, passport number, course dates or fee figures will cause problems and must be corrected before you apply.

    Typically: 1–2 weeks

  13. Tuberculosis test at an approved clinic

    Specific to UK

Required for applicants from Nepal. The clinic must appear on the UK-approved list; a certificate from any other clinic will be rejected.

    Typically: 1–2 weeks

  14. Complete the online application and pay the IHS

    Specific to UK

The Student route application is completed online. The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid in full at this point for the whole visa period.

    Typically: 1 day

  15. Biometrics appointment

Attend the visa application centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph, and to submit documents.

    Typically: 1 day

  16. Credibility interview, if required

    Specific to UK

Some applicants are asked to attend a short interview about their course, institution and study plans. Answer in your own words, consistently with your application.

    Typically: If requested

  17. Decision

GOV.UK states a decision usually within three weeks when applying from outside the UK. This is guidance, not a commitment.

    Typically: Guide: 3 weeks

  18. Accommodation and travel

Confirm accommodation and book travel only after the decision. Note the earliest permitted arrival date on your visa.

    Typically: 2–4 weeks

  19. Pre-departure orientation

Covering arrival, banking, registration with the university, healthcare, accommodation rights and academic expectations.

    Typically: Before departure

  20. On arrival — collect your BRP or activate your eVisa

    Specific to UK

Complete the immigration formalities required by your decision letter, register with the university and enrol. Register with a GP early rather than waiting until you are unwell.

    Typically: First 2 weeks

UK Government (GOV.UK)Reviewed 26 August 2026

Funds you must show

£1,529 per month for London, up to 9 months

UK Government (GOV.UK)Reviewed 26 August 2026

How the funds requirement actually works

You must show course fees for the first year plus living costs: £1,529 per month for study in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for a maximum of nine months. That gives £13,761 or £10,539 respectively for a full-length course, on top of any unpaid tuition. The money must be held for 28 consecutive days in a qualifying account, and the closing balance date must fall within 31 days of your visa application date. This 28-day rule is applied strictly and is the single most common technical reason UK student applications are refused — plan the calendar backwards from your intended application date, and do not move the money during the 28-day window.

Health requirements

  • A tuberculosis test certificate from a UK-approved clinic is required for applicants from Nepal.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge must be paid in full at application, covering the entire visa period. It gives access to the NHS on broadly the same basis as a UK resident.
  • No general medical examination is required beyond the TB test.

Biometrics and interview

Fingerprints and a photograph are enrolled at a visa application centre in Nepal after the online application is submitted.

A credibility interview may be required. It is a short conversation about your course, your chosen institution, your funding and your plans. It is assessed on whether your answers are genuine and consistent with your application, not on polish — answer in your own words.

Processing time

GOV.UK states you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks when applying from outside the UK.

UK Government (GOV.UK)Reviewed 26 August 2026

Dependants

Eligibility to bring a partner or children has been substantially restricted and now depends on your course type and level. This is among the most frequently changed areas of UK student immigration policy — verify the current position on GOV.UK before making any family plans or financial commitments.

Common causes of delay

  • Errors on the CAS requiring reissue by the university.
  • Financial evidence that does not satisfy the 28-day rule, most often because funds moved during the window.
  • TB certificates obtained from a clinic not on the approved list.
  • Biometrics appointment availability during the peak pre-September period.
  • Documents not translated or certified as required.

Mistakes that cost people their application

  • Mistiming the 28-day fund-holding period, or transferring money between accounts during it.
  • Applying before the closing statement date falls inside the required 31-day window.
  • Booking a standard English test when the university requires a UKVI-approved SELT.
  • Assuming the maintenance figure covers actual living costs — it is a visa threshold, not a budget.
  • Forgetting the Immigration Health Surcharge when calculating total up-front cost.
  • Not checking every field on the CAS before applying.
  • Failing to disclose a previous visa refusal for any country.

After you submit

Track the application through the visa application centre's system and respond promptly to any request for further documents.

If your visa is granted

  1. 1.Check the decision letter for the earliest date you are permitted to enter the UK.
  2. 2.Follow the instructions on collecting your BRP or activating your eVisa.
  3. 3.Confirm accommodation before travelling; avoid signing a long private lease unseen.
  4. 4.Attend pre-departure orientation.
  5. 5.Register with the university and complete enrolment on arrival.
  6. 6.Register with a local GP early.

If your visa is refused

  1. 1.Read the refusal notice — it identifies the specific paragraph of the rules that was not met.
  2. 2.Technical refusals, particularly on the 28-day financial rule, are often correctable in a fresh application.
  3. 3.Check whether an administrative review is available and note its deadline, which is short.
  4. 4.Disclose the refusal in any future application to any country.
  5. 5.Do not reapply without addressing the stated reason — a second refusal on the same ground is significantly harder to recover from.

Questions

Studying in UK — common questions

How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa?

Your first year's tuition fees, plus living costs of £1,529 per month if studying in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for a maximum of nine months. That is £13,761 or £10,539 in living costs for a full-length course. Critically, the money must be held for 28 consecutive days and your closing statement date must be within 31 days of applying. These figures are published directly by GOV.UK.

What is the 28-day rule and why does it catch people out?

Your maintenance funds must sit in a qualifying account for 28 unbroken days, and the statement's end date must fall within 31 days of your application date. Applicants trip on it by transferring money between accounts mid-window, by applying too early, or by applying too late so the statement has gone stale. Work the calendar backwards from your intended application date and do not touch the money during the window.

Do I need a TB test to apply from Nepal?

Yes. Applicants from Nepal must provide a tuberculosis test certificate, and it must come from a clinic on the UK-approved list. A test at any other clinic, however reputable, will not be accepted. Check the approved clinic list on GOV.UK before booking.

How long does a UK student visa take?

GOV.UK states you will usually receive a decision within three weeks when applying from outside the UK. That is published guidance, not a guarantee, and it can extend during the peak period before the September intake. Never book non-refundable travel before your decision.

Is a one-year UK master's degree taken seriously?

Yes. The twelve-month taught master's is the UK's standard postgraduate structure, not an abbreviated version of something longer, and it is recognised as a full qualification internationally. It is intensive — two taught semesters plus a dissertation — so the compression is in the calendar, not the content.

Can I bring my spouse with me to the UK?

It depends on your course type and level. Rules on dependants have been significantly tightened in recent years and continue to change. Verify the current position on GOV.UK before making any family or financial plans — do not rely on what applied to someone who travelled in an earlier year.

What is the difference between the university's English requirement and the visa English requirement?

They are two separate standards. At degree level your university, as a licensed sponsor, can assess your English itself and confirm it on the CAS. Below degree level you must sit an approved Secure English Language Test at an approved centre — a standard IELTS booking will not satisfy this. Always ask your university which test and version they need before you book.

Immigration and cost information on this page last reviewed . Rules, fees and thresholds change — always confirm against the official source before you apply.
