A fully computer-based English test with fast results and automated scoring — popular with students who prefer no face-to-face speaking interview.
What PTE Academic is
PTE Academic is delivered entirely on a computer at a test centre and scored by automated systems rather than human examiners. The whole test, including speaking, is completed in a single sitting — you speak into a headset rather than to an examiner. Its defining feature is integrated scoring: a single task can contribute to more than one skill score, so a spoken response is assessed for both speaking and, where relevant, reading.
Who accepts it
PTE Academic is accepted by the great majority of universities across Australia, the UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the USA, and by several immigration authorities for student visa purposes. Acceptance for visa purposes is not identical to acceptance for admission, and has changed over time in some destinations — confirm both before booking.

Test format
PTE Academic is taken in one continuous session at a test centre, covering Speaking and Writing together, then Reading, then Listening. Because scoring is integrated, tasks frequently assess more than one skill at once — which is why preparing 'section by section' works less well for PTE than for IELTS.

How scoring works
10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English
You receive an overall score plus communicative skill scores for listening, reading, speaking and writing, and enabling skill scores such as grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse. Because scoring is integrated, weakness in one enabling skill can pull down more than one communicative score — poor pronunciation, for example, affects speaking directly and can affect other tasks that depend on spoken responses.

Registering and getting results
We do not publish test fees. Providers set them per country and per centre, and a fee that has gone stale is worse than none — check the official site when you book.
- Create an account on the official Pearson PTE website.
- Select PTE Academic — confirm you are not booking a different Pearson product.
- Choose an authorised test centre and an available date in Nepal.
- Book early ahead of peak intake periods.
- Bring the same passport used at registration; identity requirements are strictly enforced.

How to prepare
What actually moves a score, based on where students from Nepal most often lose marks.
- Understand integrated scoring first. Preparing for PTE as though it were four separate skills is the most common structural mistake.
- Practise on a computer with a headset from day one. Speaking into a microphone is a genuinely different skill from speaking to a person.
- Speak at a steady, even pace. The automated scoring rewards consistent fluency and clear pronunciation more than dramatic expression, and long pauses are penalised.
- Write from dictation is one of the highest-value tasks relative to its length. Drill it deliberately.
- Do not stop speaking mid-task to correct yourself — the recording captures the hesitation and the scoring does not reward the correction.
- Take full-length mock tests on a computer to build stamina; PTE is a single continuous sitting.

PTE Academic — common questions
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Not easier, but different. PTE suits students who are comfortable with computers, prefer automated scoring, and would rather not face a live examiner. IELTS suits students who speak more naturally to a person. The best test is the one whose format matches how you actually perform, so take a diagnostic in both if you are unsure.
How does automated scoring affect how I should speak?
Speak clearly at a steady pace and keep going. The algorithm rewards consistent fluency and clear pronunciation; it penalises long pauses, false starts and self-corrections. Students who are used to pausing to find a better word often score below their actual ability until they adjust.
Is PTE accepted for student visas?
It is accepted by several immigration authorities for student visa purposes, but acceptance is not identical across all six destinations and has changed over time. Confirm both your university's admission requirement and the current immigration requirement before booking.
Why did my reading score drop when I thought reading went well?
Because of integrated scoring. Several tasks contribute to more than one skill — a spoken or written task can feed into your reading score. This is why a section-by-section view of your performance can be misleading, and why the enabling skill scores are worth studying carefully.
