UK Graduate route to be cut to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027

Status: Announced — upcoming

Graduate visa applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027 will be granted for 18 months instead of two years. PhD graduates will continue to receive three years.

What changed

  • The Graduate route currently gives two years' permission after a UK bachelor's or master's degree, and three years after a PhD.
  • For Graduate applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027, permission for non-PhD graduates will be 18 months. PhD graduates keep three years.

Key dates

Officially announced
Takes effect

Who may be affected

  • Anyone applying for the Graduate route on or after 1 January 2027.

Key takeaways

  • The change is set by the date you apply for the Graduate route, not the date you started your course.
  • It was announced in the May 2025 Immigration White Paper and implemented through Statement of Changes HC 1333.

What students should do

  1. If your course finishes before 1 January 2027, ask MATES and your university whether you can apply before that date — you can only apply once your university has confirmed completion.
  2. If you are starting a course now, plan your job search around an 18-month Graduate route.
