UK raises the English requirement for Skilled Worker visas to B2

Status: In effect

Since 8 January 2026, people seeking an initial grant on the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual or Scale-up routes must show English at CEFR level B2 instead of B1. This matters to students who plan to move into skilled work after their studies.

What changed

  • The English language requirement for the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual and Scale-up routes increased from B1 to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Who may be affected

  • Anyone seeking an initial grant of permission on one of these routes from 8 January 2026.
  • People who already hold permission on one of these routes, where they showed B1, continue to be assessed at B1 when extending on the same route.

Key takeaways

  • The Student visa's own English requirement is not what changed here — this affects the step from study into skilled work.

What students should do

  1. If you plan to move into a Skilled Worker job after study, check early how you will meet the B2 requirement.
  2. Ask MATES which ways of evidencing English apply to your situation.
